Inaction of the government against those involved in illegal sex determination came up for a debate in the Legislative Council on Wednesday and BJP member Tejaswini Gowda accused the Department of Women and Child Development of apathy in acting against doctors involved.

Ms. Gowda, who raised the issue, said though 80 cases of revealing sex of the foetus had been registered in the past 18 years, no one had been convicted.

Even funds released by the Centre under Beti Bachao and Beti Padao scheme had not been used, she alleged.

“Of the ₹ 2.5 crore released for five districts in Karnataka, ₹35.48 lakh has been spent so far,” she said.

In her reply, Jaimala, Minister for Women and Child Development, admitted that the situation was alarming and said department was watching over 4,000 scanning centres in the State. However, she asserted that compared with other States, sex ratio was better in Karnataka.
