COIMBATORE: The school education department had introduced vocational courses for Class IX students in 67 government schools across the state on pilot basis in January.

Three schools in the district — Municipal Girls Higher Secondary School in Pollachi, Government Higher Secondary School in Pollachi and CCMA Government Girls Higher Secondary School on Raja Street in the city — were selected for the programme as they have highest number of students.

Based on the skill gap reports by the Centre, courses in agriculture, automotive, apparel and made-ups, beauty and wellness, electronics and hardware, and multi skills were chosen and two courses were allotted to each school in the state, said an official incharge of implementing the project. About 40 students are learning a course in a school.

“To train the students, two trainers per school have been roped in through vocational training providers (VTPs). The department has allotted funds to set up labs,” another official said, adding, “A sum of Rs 48,000 was released per school to procure equipment. The schools are expected to procure equipment before March.”

The students will get hands-on training an hour per day in an industrial set-up in the school. They will cover a total of 200 hours a year, the official said. “As the courses started late this year, the department decided to complete the training by March and will conduct internal examination in June.”

The syllabus is framed as per the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) and the students will take NSQF examination at the end of the course. The courses are designed in such a way that the students would take level II and level IV of NSQF examination when they are in Class X and XII respectively, the official said.

The state government is also training the subject experts on teaching pedagogy, employment opportunities and technical skills.

The ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) has started giving vocational training in government schools from the academic year 2018-19 under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) to strengthen the vocational education and to equip students with an additional skill.

About 40 years ago, vocational courses were introduced as a part of higher secondary education.
