The city traffic police has appealed to the public to pass on information about any road accident without hesitation so that precious lives can be saved.

Reiterating Good Samaritan guidelines issued by the Union government, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), A. Arun, said a bystander or a Good Samaritan including an eyewitness of a road accident can take an injured person to the nearest hospital and he/she should be allowed to leave immediately after furnishing the address and that no question should be asked.

The Good Samaritans “shall not be liable for any civil and criminal liability”. The disclosure of personal information, such as name and contact details should be made voluntary and optional, he said.

Lack of response by a doctor in an emergency situation pertaining to road accidents, where he/she is expected to provide care, would constitute “professional misconduct” and disciplinary action should be taken against such doctors as per the guidelines, he said.
