PATNA: An on-the-spot foundation laying ceremony for the much-awaited Patna metro rail project will be held at gate number I of the Patna zoo simultaneously with the main programme at Begusarai which will be presided over by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

According to sources, the PM is likely to lay the foundation stone for a number of projects related to the state urban development and housing department, health department and ministry of external affairs. He will also dedicate the Barauni fertilizer plant to the nation.

While the PM will be accompanied by chief minister (CM) Nitish Kumar, his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi and Union food and consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Pawan, the on-spot foundation laying ceremony will be presided over by state urban development minister Suresh Kumar Sharma. Local legislators and other people’s representatives will also attend the event.

Patna metro rail project was approved by the central cabinet, headed by the PM at its meeting held on Wednesday. CM Nitish Kumar later requested him to lay the foundation stone for the metro rail project which has been hanging in balance for over a decade now.

As per the approved detailed project report for the metro rail project, the 16.95km east-west corridor will cover Danapur-Saguna Mor, Bailey Road, Patna Junction and Mithapur bus stand. The 14.45km north-south corridor, on the other hand, will connect the Patna Junction with the proposed bus stand at Bairiya via Ashok Rajpath, Gandhi Maidan and Rajendra Nagar Terminal. While the east-west corridor will mostly be underground (11.20km), the north-south corridor (9.9km) will be elevated.

Experts claimed that five years’ time is quite feasible for completion of works on a metro rail project.
