Wits, Leopards fail to agree date for rescheduled Nedbank Cup clash

2019-02-14 13:43

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits and Black Leopards failed to agree to play their rescheduled Nedbank Cup clash on Thursday, after the original last-16 fixture was called off due to heavy rain.

Torrential rain forced the abandonment of the cup tie on Wednesday at half-time with hosts Black Leopards leading Wits 1-0 in Thohoyandou.

Lesedi Kapinga broke the deadlock on 37 minutes with a shot from the edge of the box, but the goal will not count with officials saying the cup tie has to be replayed in full.

"The match officials assessed the pitch at half-time and believed it would be dangerous to continue playing on it," a spokesperson for the organisers said.

"An announcement will be made Thursday regarding a new date for the round-of-16 fixture," he added.

"We just met the two clubs. We were trying to discuss the possibility of playing [on Thursday], unfortunately there is no agreement, which means that the PSL will set a new date for this fixture," PSL head of communications Lux September told the media.

"Obviously we have to look at the conditions of this stadium, the conditions of the field to ensure the pitch is playable. We will be in contact with the stadium and the home club."
