PUNE: The Kondhwa police arrested a peon and booked his two accomplices on Tuesday for allegedly duping a man of Rs38 lakh on the pretext of offering him gold biscuits at a lower rate between June and August, last year.

The accused has been identified as Chetan Ghule (22) from Undri. A city court remanded Ghule to magisterial custody. He was later released on bail.

Akash Kamthe (26), who operates a water tanker business in Kondhwa, has registered an FIR against the suspects. “The suspects told Kamthe that they could help him purchase gold biscuits at a lower rate. Kamthe borrowed money from his family members and friends and paid them for 100 ‘tola’ gold biscuits. Gule later returned Rs2 lakh but the others failed to repay him,” a police officer said.

Assistant inspector Chetan Kale said, “We arrested Ghule but did not recover anything from him. We are on the lookout for his accomplices.”
