Nagpur: Jayraj Sirmukaddam, first software engineer with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), who fought the deadly disease for 27 years, passed away at his residence in Ram Nagar on Wednesday.
Jayraj, who led a life full of achievements, was perhaps the first and only person in India with DMD who survived for such a long period. According to experts, DMD patients hardly survive beyond their teenage years.

“Jayraj was doing well until July, 2018. His health started deteriorating afterwards. When his condition became serious, Jayraj wished to be moved to his residence from hospital. Today, after 12.30pm, his condition became critical and he passed away in the evening,” said Narendra Giridhar, his maternal uncle.

Members of Sirmukaddam family, including Jayraj’s parents Mukund and Shaila, were with him during his last moments. The last rites will be performed at Ambazari Ghat on Thursday morning.

A bright student, Jayraj had scored 82% in SSC, 68% in diploma in engineering (IT) and 72% in BE. An alumnus of Somalwar High School, Government Polytechnic and GH Raisoni College of Engineering, he was working as software developer at Persistent Systems for the last two years.

Jayraj used to participate in various social and cultural activities and he used to motivate differently abled people through his talks.
