A New York City police detective is dead after a shooting during an apparent armed robbery, authorities said.
A second detective was also shot and wounded in the leg and was listed as stable in serious condition, police said Tuesday evening.
The deceased detective was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the hospital, officials told NBC New York.
The detectives were responding to a 911 call about a robbery in progress at a cellphone store in Queens, NBC New York reported.
Both detectives were taken to Jamaica Hospital by patrol car after the incident, the officials said.
Mayor Bill de Blasio was headed to the hospital, Eric Phillips, a spokesman, said in a tweet.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., tweeted about the shooting late Tuesday.
"We are forever indebted to the brave NYPD detective who was killed in Queens tonight and the sergeant who was wounded," Schumer said. "May God bless them and their families."
