Cities try to restart Amazon HQ2 race

SOUNDBITE: JIMMY VAN BRAMER, CITY COUNCILMAN, QUEENS (DEMOCRAT) (ENGLISH) SAYING: "What the mayor and governor did here was to negotiate in secret a really bad deal for New York." It's opposition like that from local politicians and nearby residents to Amazon's planned New York City headquarters in Queens that reportedly has the tech giant reconsidering the whole thing.

Something not lost on states originally turned down for Amazon's so-called HQ2.

They are dusting off proposals in hope they can try again if the Amazon-New York deal comes crashing down.

Some of the jockeying is just as aggressive as the original contest, says Reuters correspondent Dan Trotta.

SOUNDBITE: DANIEL TROTTA, REUTERS CORRESPONDENT (ENGLISH) SAYING: "It should be said that Newark has a particularly aggressive bid that it is reactivating some of the most impressive totals of tax credits that it is offering to Amazon and it is also willing to share with New York, in the event New York would accept a scaled-down version of HQ2, Newark is willing to pick up the slack." Other states not shy about a possible second chance include Illinois.

And Nashville, Tennessee, which is getting a smaller 5,000-employee facility, said it was open to an even bigger partnership.

Dusting off old proposals, however, may be premature.

The New York location still has the backing of two of the most powerful local officials: Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill DeBlasio, both who seem ready to fight to save the proposed 25,000 jobs Amazon would bring in exchange for controversial $3 billion in tax breaks.
