Focus on improving road infrastructure to avert accidents

PMC officials stated that the work had been taken up across Pune. PUNE: The civic body, in association with an NGO, has started improving road infrastructure across the city to ensure the users’ safety.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken up the work with Safe Road Foundation as part of the 30th Road Safety Week programmes that began on February 4. PMC executive engineer Lalit Bode said the work to develop the road infrastructure has been taken up across the city.
He said, “We have eight executive engineers in the civic body. Each of them is overseeing the work in areas under his or her jurisdiction. Installing bollards along footpaths, reflectors on the roads, painting of medians and ensuring thermoplastic paint on zebra crossing, parking zones, dividers, speed breakers, and stop lines are part of the project.”
The engineer said though such work was done throughout the year, there was more focus on the initiative as part of the Road Safety Week. “We have our road maintenance vans to look after these tasks round the year. But the momentum has picked up this month. We identified locations that required the work. We are also responding to suggestions of the traffic police,” he said.
Areas such as Koregaon Park, Kalyaninagar, Vimannagar, Tingrenagar-Airport road and Baner have seen such infrastructure development work. Samaiirah of the Safe Road Foundation, which has conceptualized the initiative, said the Pune police, the Regional Transport Office and several other organizations have taken up awareness programmes to mark the Road Safety Week.
She said, “Our organization tied up with the PMC to make the roads safer for the users by improving the infrastructure. Among the works are installing reflectors or cat eyes at the accident-prone and blind spots and painting road markings such as stop line and zebra crossing have been undertaken. The work is likely to finish next week.”
Samaiirah said the NGO and the civic body would from next year start the task before Road Safety Week starts. “We started a bit late this year. This will not happen from 2020. Road markings and infrastructure must be repaired and improved once in every six months. The aim is to avert accidents caused by poor infrastructure.”
