Subaru Won’t Give Us A Turbocharged Crosstrek Because It Already Sells Like Hot Cakes

Subaru’s Crosstrek and Forester have proven to be big hits for the Japanese manufacturer in the US, leading to many requests for a more powerful version.

Subaru’s move to offer the 2020 Legacy with the 260hp turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine has revived the topic, but apparently we’re not going to get a turbocharged Crosstrek anytime soon because the compact crossover is too popular with the customers already as it is.

“You could argue, and some people do, that for the Crosstrek we should have a higher-performance engine in that car,” Subaru North America president Tom Doll told Motor Trend during an interview. “But on the other hand, we’re selling as many as we can get. We haven’t really hit the top with the Crosstrek yet.”

“Same thing for the new Forester. The new Forester is a sensational car, and it’s a home run, particularly the Sport model that you see over here. We just can’t stock it. I think both of those car lines have a 20-day supply or less,” Doll added.

However, Doll did leave the door open for more turbocharged Subarus. “In the future, if we need to hit additional volume targets or if the sales wane a little bit, as a way to try to get additional interest in the car, (we could) offer a higher-performance engine. That’s quite possible.”

So there you have it: if you want a new Crosstrek or Forester with more power, cross your fingers and simply pray for sales of the current models to start declining. That, or just wait for Subaru to efficiently expand its facilities and boost its production levels.
