Dharwad: Karnatak University suspended Professor K M Hosamani of the department of chemistry on Tuesday on charges of sexual harassment and plagiarism among others. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Syndicate following a report by the four-member fact finding committee, said vice-chancellor Pramod Gai here on Wednesday.
He said KU formed a four-member committee to probe the charges against Hosamani on February 4. “The committee questioned Hosamani for three days and later submitted a report stating that the charges against the professor were prima facie true. The Syndicate decided to suspend Prof Hosamani pending a high level inquiry into the charges and accordingly, the varsity issued orders on Tuesday suspending him,” said Gai.
The V-C said the Syndicate decided to constitute a one-man committee headed by retired district judge V A Muchandi to probe into the charges in detail and submit a report in a month. Based on his report, the government will be requested to take further action, Gai said.
The main charges against Professor Hosamani, who was appointed as registrar (administration), only to be removed from the post by the state government on February 1, are sexually harassing a girl student who was doing PhD under him and plagiarism. He is also accused of giving out information that was not to be given under the RTI Act.
Gai expressed regret that Hosamani approached the media and leveled false allegations that there were irregularities in the use of the Rs 5 crore granted by the state government for the centenary celebrations of Karnatak College. He clarified that the expenditure has been audited by government and university auditors and out of the Rs 5 crore, Rs 2.86 crore was utilized and the remaining amount is with the university. Gai said he would file a criminal defamation case against Hosamani. Registrar (administration) Vijayalaxmi Aminabhavi, registrar (evaluation) Sali, finance officer R L Hyderabad and Chemistry HoD Mahadevappa Karidurganavar were present.
