'I found him on the ground... blue around the face': Devastated mother whose police officer husband hit and killed their 10-week-old son in a fit of rage breaks her silence

  • A mother whose infant son was killed by his father has broken her silence
  • Debbra Chalmers came home to find her 10-week-old son bruised on the floor
  • Her husband, Colin Randall, told her he was only trying to perform CPR
  • But 18 months later, it was revealed he actually punched the boy in a fit of rage

A heartbroken mother has shared the moment she learnt her 10-week-old son had died at the hands of his abusive father.

Debbra Chalmers has broken her silence after her former Queensland police officer husband Colin Randall fatally punched their son Kye in 2014.

Randall, 41, repeatedly lied to his wife, saying their baby boy died when he went wrongly applied CPR after the infant inexplicably went limp and pale.

But it was later revealed Randall had actually lost his temper, taking it out on his own son and pulping his liver in a horrendous act of violence that saw him jailed in 2018.

'I found him on the ground... blue around the face and lying on the ground on the tiles,' Ms Chalmers told A Current Affair, an image she says she'll never forget.

Randall kept the true cause of their son's death a secret for 18 months, manipulating her into believing it was a total accident.

In reality, Randall had leaned over the crib and unleashed a punch on the child after learning he had been denied a promotion.

The police officer was 'frustrated' about a family illness and a failed work transfer to Hervey Bay.

It was the first and only time he had been left alone with the child, a court heard during a sentencing hearing last May.

Ms Chalmers said she had repeatedly tried to end her relationship with her husband.

But every time she showed any inclination of leaving him, he would threaten to cut her off from her children.

'I would tell him I'm leaving and he would go back to saying "well if you go, you can go, but you can leave the children here. You'll never see them again."'

She claims he would tell her that he could use his influence as a police officer to keep custody of their children.

'I'm a police officer, no one's going to believe you,' she claims he told her.

During the first half of a sentencing hearing last year, a Brisbane court heard Randall had been having an affair with a woman he worked with, who had links to Hervey Bay.

A judge accepted that while Randall didn't mean to kill his child, he did intend to hurt him.

He was sentenced to nine years in jail with a non-parole period of five years.

The judge also took into account that Randall tried to cover up the cause of death for so long, deciding it showed a lack of remorse.

Accounting for time already served, he will be eligible for parole in January 2021.
