Kodi Mutt seer gets honorary doctorate from Kuvempu University
Times News Network | Feb 14, 2019, 05:00 ISTShivamogga: Shivananda Shivayogi Rajendra Seer of Kodi Mutt in Arasikere taluk, Hassan district, known for predicting the future based on ancient palm leaves, has been selected for a honorary doctorate of the Kuvempu University, Shivamogga. It will be conferred on Friday at the 29th convocation.
University vice-chancellor Jogan Shankar said the seer is engaged in dasoha (mass feeding) service beside contributing immensely to the education sector and communal harmony across the state. "Keeping all this in mind, he has been selected for the honorary doctorate. Twelve names were submitted for consideration of the university. Three names were shortlisted and sent to the governor's office. The governor approved one name," he said.
NAAC director SC Sharma will deliver the convocation address and higher education minister GT Devegowda will be the chief guest.
The VC said, "In all, 27,447 candidates will be awarded various degrees; 16,466 female students and 10,981 male students will be given degrees. Of 205 candidates who will be conferred Ph.D, 150 are male and 55 are female research scholars," he said.
Also, 112 gold medals will be conferred; 49 females students and the rest male.
MA (Kannada) student of IDSG college in Chikkamagaluru KM Netravati has won the highest number of gold medals (7) and a cash award too.
Appeal for more gold medals
The VC requested donors to come forward to institute more gold medals. "In other universities, a Rs 2 lakh deposit is required to institute a gold medal, but in Kuvempu University, Rs 1 lakh is enough. More donors must come forward," he said.
He said among students graduating in various courses, a majority are from the distance education centre. In all, 15,351 students of the distance education cell will be conferred awards, while 12,096 regular students will be given degrees.
