Mehbooba demands mortal remains of Afzal Guru
M Saleem Pandit | TNN | Feb 13, 2019, 23:12 ISTSRINAGAR: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president and former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday asked the Centre to hand over the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru to his family at Sopore in north Kashmir.
Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorist Afzal Guru was executed on February 9, 2013, in the Parliament House terror attack case in which five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists were involved. The LeT terrorists had carried out the attack on the temple of Indian democracy on December 13, 2001, killing nine people in the process. Guru had played an instrumental role in helping the LeT terrorists launch the attack.
Holding a press conference at her official residence here, Mehbooba targeted the then central government and former President Pranab Mukherjee over the hanging of Guru, who was found guilty of conspiring and sheltering the LeT terrorists.
“Guru’s mercy petition, which was at serial number 28, was suddenly rejected and he was hanged without even allowing him to meet his family members. PDP’s stand on Guru has never changed and late Mufti Sayeed had also asked the Centre to return his mortal remains,” Mehbooba told reporters.
Interestingly, on Monday, PDP Rajya Sabha member Fayaz Ahmad Mir had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to return the mortal remains of Guru and JKLF leader Maqbool Bhat, who too was executed inthe early 80s.
Mehbooba also told the Centre “not to sow seeds of discord and create new fault lines in the turbulent Jammu and Kashmir by alienating Muslims in the state”.
Slamming the J&K administration over adopting different yardsticks for different regions in the state, she said Governor Satya Pal Malik was implementing the core BJP agenda in the otherwise Muslim majority state by dividing J&K into fragments and pitting different regions and communities against each other.
