Decision of the police to issue notice to violators has served the purpose, says SSP

There has been a remarkable improvement in compliance with the helmet rule on Tuesday after the police decided to enforce the law two days ago.

A large number of two-wheeler riders were seen wearing helmet while commuting on the arterial roads and in boulevard area. “There has been a huge jump in the number of people wearing helmet when compared to Monday when the police began enforcing the rule. I will say the number has doubled,” said a traffic policeman posted at Rajiv Gandhi Signal.

Talking to The Hindu, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Rahul Alwal said the decision of the police to serve notice to violators had served the purpose. “The fear and hassle of going to the court to remit the fine will certainly prompt more people to comply with the law,” he said.

On the first day, the police have collected as many as 11,260 two-wheeler vehicle numbers of riders without the head-gear. The move will continue till full compliance was ensured. The first time offenders will have to pay a fine of ₹100, he added

Police will start serving notice to the riders from the end of this week, he said.

The police have decided to automate the preparation of summons to lessen the burden of traffic cops. The automation would help the police in serving at least 2,000 to 3,000 notices per day, Mr. Alwal said. In addition to the deployment of around 70 men from the traffic police, the services of 20 to 30 India Reserve Battalion constables were taken to book the offenders, he said.
