Mysuru: An 18-year-old college student ended her life, leaving a two-page suicide note laying the blame for taking such an extreme step squarely at the feet of her boyfriend. Arpita, a second year BA student, committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging from the ceiling of her home in Hunsur.
Arpita has asked for her boyfriend, Lokesh Gowda, 26, to be sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly cheating her. In her note, Arpita has stated that the two had been romantically involved for the past year, during which time Lokesh allegedly misbehaved with her on multiple occasions. Her note also recounts incidents wherein Lokesh even treated her inhumanly.
Problems started to aggravate when Lokesh started to distance himself from Arpita, when the latter, about two months ago, started insisting that the former to get his parents’ approval for their marriage. It was Lokesh’s refusal to marry her that proved to be the tipping point for Arpita. Despair mounted after her repeated attempts to contact Lokesh failed, prompting Arpita to commit suicide.
She has requested cops to ensure that justice is meted out to her, by punishing Lokesh so as to prevent other girls from meeting the same fate as she.
Hunsur rural police said that Arpita had informed her parents about her romantic involvement with Lokesh. “Her parents reportedly also brought the matter to the attention of cops. But Arpita was very unhappy when Lokesh refused to marry her, and when all members in her family left home, she decided to end her life,” Hunsur rural police said.
A case has been registered against Lokesh under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.
