CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday introduced bills to establish two corporations – Hosur in Krishnagiri district and Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district -- to upgrade the infrastructure facilities. The bills will be taken up for discussion on Thursday, the last day of the budget session.

During the centenary celebration of former chief minister M G Ramachandran in Krishnagiri in September 2017, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami made an announcement that considering the increase in population, growth in annual income and level of the civic services to be provided towards fulfilment of the basic needs of the growing population and for improving the standard of living of the people in the municipality, the Hosur municipality would be upgraded to a corporation.

“To give effect to the announcement, the state government decided to undertake legislation adopting the provisions of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Act, 1981 with such modifications as are necessary,” municipal administration minister S P Velumani said, while introducing the bills.

Palaniswami also made a similar announcement in Nagercoil in September last year that after completion of the delimitation exercise, the municipality would be upgraded to a corporation.

The municipal corporations will get an elected mayor, an elected council, a standing committee, wards committee and a commissioner to discharge the duties.
