NEW DELHI: Delhi government on Wednesday launched the web portal of Delhi Archives that has over 60 lakh digitised old land records for the general public to access with the click of a mouse. After registering on the portal, anyone can see the chain of any property till the year 1993, how the ownership was transferred and get a copy of it after paying a small fee.

Launching the portal, deputy CM Manish Sisodia said this will bring much-needed transparency in land ownership in the capital. To show people how the search engine works, Sisodia searched the property details of a former PM, a popular film star and a former bureaucrat and got some staggering results.

He said the documents made live have always been in the public domain. By digitising and sharing them online, the government has made access to these land records much easier. Sanjay Garg, the nodal officer of project Digitisation and Microfilming of Archival Records, said the documents have been digitised and preserved under book 1 of the property registration wing of revenue department, which have sale and lease deeds of properties in Delhi.

The wills registered with the department and special and general power of attorney, which are considered confidential documents, have not been put online. “We have so far digitised, microfilmed and meta-tagged about 1.7 crore of the four crore documents and about 60 lakh of them have been put online. We will be adding more documents to the repository every day,” Garg said.

The project was started in September 2017 and will cost Rs 25.4 crore. “This will not only facilitate users, but also give a long life to the records. The portal will also help in preventing polluting of history being promoted through WhatsApp and provide the correct historical facts,” Sisodia said
