Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy wardrobe proves that he’s game for anything
From hot pink leopard print to Disney-inspired faux fur, the only rule in Ranveer Singh’s promotional wardrobe for Gully Boy—to use a cliché—is that there are no rules

To the casual bystander, it can seem like a stroke of pure kismet that Ranveer Singh should embody the role of his unofficial spirit animal in his next release—Gully Boy has him playing a rapper who works his way up from the ghetto to eventually dominate the hip-hop scene. The method actor’s dedication to his craft has never come in as handy as it did in the promotions spree for the movie, which sees the newly-married Singh airing out his most traffic-stopping looks yet—from head-to-toe animal print and skinny tracksuits to a sky blue furry affair reminiscent of a certain Monsters Inc protagonist.
Even before Gully Boy could sell a single ticket at the box office, Singh has been treating his fans to a spectacle of sorts with his sartorial insouciance. Pumped with the success of his last release, Simmba, he proceeded to hit the ground running for the promotions of his next. While co-star Alia Bhatt matches his flair with metallic ensembles, the 33-year-old has been cashing in on the unseasonably long winter in Mumbai with some nifty layering in his wardrobe. Cue, the puffer jackets that the city’s residents usually stow away for vacations abroad.
Nitasha Gaurav, who has been working with the star for the past seven years as his personal stylist, says, “People often ask me where we come up with these outfit combinations from, but the truth is that when you are working with somebody like Ranveer Singh, there is no holding back. You can’t put him in blue jeans and a white shirt or a somber black suit. His wardrobe is larger than life because that is what his personality is. In all the years that we’ve worked together, he’s never refused to try anything on; it’s all about pushing the envelope further and testing new boundaries.”
The trailer launch of the movie had Singh opting for a kaleidoscopic burst of colours, including a traffic cone-yellow puffer jacket, an equally vibrant purple T-shirt and gender neutral trousers from Jeremy Scott x Adidas—all in the same outfit. The sartorial party continued at the music launch, where the actor stepped onstage in head-to-toe neon green, topped off with a puffy metallic jacket for maximum effect. Gaurav adds, “When you are working with an exaggerated silhouette like that of a puffer jacket, there is no playing it safe. You have to go big all the way. Since he travels a lot of the time, the bulky silhouette makes logical sense as well, usually paired with leaner separates inside.”
Proving his commitment to his role, Singh’s off-duty wardrobe soon made room for two staples: a Prada bucket hat and a heavy gold chain that together constitute the flag-bearing signature of the hip-hop scene. Not afraid to walk the fine line between kitschy and cool, Singh continued to dance on the edge of print-on-print madness with a leopard print suit and a coordinated shirt at an awards function.
The recent world premiere of the movie drew the loudest cheers at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival, and the adrenalin rush translated directly into the star’s wardrobe. Stepping out in a sky blue Manish Arora faux fur jacket, the irrepressible actor immediately had the internet throwing back to Sullivan from Monsters Inc—we also saw #SullyBoy as a trending hashtag. “We always knew wanted something from [Manish Arora] for the movie promotions. The designer came back to us with a custom jacket with shaggy faux fur, accessorised with a slew of appliqués and badges that served as the perfect extension to Ranveer Singh’s larger-than-life personality,” Gaurav decodes. The actor followed this up with a hot pink leopard jacket from Tom Ford, proving that he isn’t out of tricks quite just yet.
