KWA’s work for pongala almost over

1,240 additional taps to be installed in city

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is almost through with its efforts to ensure adequate water supply during the upcoming Attukal pongala festival.

A special team, entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out maintenance, will function round the clock until the completion of the pongala.

Focus area

Its efforts will be mainly focused around four areas, viz., Attukal, Fort, Chala and Sreevaraham.

As many as 1,240 taps will be installed in these regions before February 17, according to an official release.

These include 700 taps in the Attukal region, comprising the Attukal, Kalippankulam, Konchiravila, Kuriathy and Manacaud wards; 110 taps in the Chala region, which include the Thampanoor and Chala wards; 160 taps in the Fort region, comprising the Fort and Enchakkal wards; and 270 taps in the Sreevaraham region, which include the Sreevaraham, Ambalathara, Kamaleswaram, Manikavilakam and Puthenpally wards.

Besides, 50 temporary showers will be installed in the Attukal region, officials say. Tanker lorries will also be provided wherever necessary. Vending points will be established at PTP Nagar and Vandithadam, and filter house to supply water to drinking water kiosks that will be established by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation at various points.

Sanction

The KWA also said administrative sanction had been obtained for funds amounting to ₹69.67 lakh for cleaning drainage pipes and manholes in areas where pongala offerings would be made.

These works would be completed by February 18, they added.
