Marc Jacobs’ most memorable red carpet looks

The Marc Jacobs show has been the exclamation point to end NYFW for more than a decade, but let’s not forget that awards season—where the designer plays a starring role—is still in full steam
The final whistle blows on New York Fashion Week autumn/winter 2019 when the last model exits the Marc Jacobs runway on Wednesday, February 13—a signal for fashion editors to race to JFK to catch transatlantic red-eyes to London Fashion Week. While Jacobs is occasionally known to run fashionably late (a record two hours in 2007), he never fails to rise to the occasion—most recently showcasing decadent, confectionary-pink, tiered gowns and door frame-wide blazers à la David Byrne circa 1983. The theatricality isn’t lost on A-listers, who over the last two decades have regularly plundered the designer’s sample cupboard for red carpet appearances, knowing that a Marc Jacobs look guarantees a certain degree of cool. Cast your mind back to 2004 when Sofia Coppola arrived at the Oscars in an eggplant silk gown, to 2009 when Kate Moss stole the show at the 2009 Met Gala in an abbreviated metallic dress and matching turban, or to last October when Lady Gaga stepped out in Jacobs’s capacious spring/summer 2019 suiting for the 25th annual Women in Hollywood celebration. The shared mood? A sense of ease as well as drama, something Gaga succinctly summed up during her speech that same evening: “In this suit, I felt like me today.”
