Accusing the Narendra Modi government of lying to Parliament on the Rafale deal, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that CAG report proves that.
He said that the finance minister, defence minister and prime minister have all stated that the NDA's Rafale deal is between 9 per cent and 20 per cent cheaper, but the CAG report says it's 2.86 per cent cheaper. "We do not agree with that percentage, but even in what they are saying, there are lies," he said.
He added that the Modi government's argument was holding on to two arguments: Price and urgency of the Air Force. "But the fact of the matter is that the new deal that Narendra Modi signed gets India the aircraft later than the original deal," he said. The report stated that if Dassault produces eight jets annually, then it will take about 10 years to complete the backlog of Rafale, as it is producing jets for France, Egypt and Qatar.
Reading from the report, he added that the second argument, too, was demolished. "The report states that, 'The final price offered by the French government, (which is escalation-based) is 55.6 per cent above the benchmark, (which is performed and fixed price). Considering the future escalations till the time of delivery, the gap in the bench mark and the final price would further increase'," said Rahul.
