Surat: A serious safety breach came to light when hundreds of passengers were asked to alight mid-way at Kim railway station due to technical failure in the train signalling system on Wednesday morning.
Official sources said that there was glitch in the signalling system at Kim railway station and Surat intercity and a local train were halted at the platform number 1 and 2 respectively. Passengers of the approaching MEMU train were asked to alight mid-way on the track. This resulted in utter confusion among the passengers who were seen rushing towards the platform.
Interestingly, the general manager of western railway, Anil Gupta, who was on the routine yearly inspection at Kim railway station, had to skip the inspection and drive away his saloon of special wagons due to the signal failure.
Rajesh Modi who was present at the platform at the time of the incident told TOI, “The passengers were told to alight midway from MEMU train. There were passengers who were running helter-skelter on the railway tracks risking their lives to board the intercity and local train standing on the Kim platform.”
“There was no announcement at the Kim station regarding the technical problem and even the GM of WR zoomed passed without conducting his yearly inspection and meeting the people wanting to represent him about the station development,” he alleged.
Sources said that the incident occurred few minutes before the GM’s saloon passed from the Kim railway station.
Station master of Kim station, KA Verghese said, “There was a technical glitch in the signal system at Kim. Both the trains were halted at the platform and the MEMU passengers were asked to alight at some distance from the station. The GM could not stop for the inspection as it could have delayed other approaching trains on the station.”
WR GM, Anil Gupta was not available for comments.
