NEW DELHI: Delhi perhaps has learnt no lesson from the recent incidents of fire in other big cities and unless there is a mishap, no one bothers about the rules.
The capital on Tuesday witnessed a horrific incident of fire in a hotel in Karol Bagh that killed 17 people, many of them in their sleep. Even after procuring fire safety clearances, hotels in Delhi are seen flouting rules rampantly. From rooftop restaurants to bars in the basement, most of the owners use commercial space beyond permissible limits in disregard of norms.
What fanned the hotel fire in Delhi's Karol Bagh:
* Karol Bagh's Arpit Palace Hotel had taken fire clearance but cops suspect it later made illegal constructions with wood and fibreglass panels.
* Firefighting equipment wasn't working and staff not trained to handle it.
* Hotel windows were sealed, making rescue difficult.
* The kitchen on the terrace had cylinders and other cooking material.
* Electrical systems were not properly fire-checked.
