Akkamahadevi Women’s University, which has been adopting new technologies to improve the quality of teaching, is now all set to introduce tele-education system.
The university, which has installed high-tech touch-screen television sets and Internet facility, has decided to teach select subjects through tele-education in its affiliated colleges.
With the help of the Department of Journalism, the university would be teaching Constitution and Environment, which are mandatory subjects for degree students, through this system.
“Since many colleges affiliated to our university do not have lecturers to teach these two important subjects, the university decided to resolve the issue through tele-education,” Omkar Kakade, head of the Journalism Department, said.
He told The Hindu that the university had asked 153 affiliated colleges to have large-screen TV sets that support Internet connectivity and an Internet connection of 2 mbps speed for starting the project. Already, 93 colleges have installed the facility, he said.
Mr. Kakade said the university would invite experts to teach the subjects which would be streamed live to all the affiliated colleges.
This technology would help colleges from appointing teachers for these subjects and it could also be used for teaching more subjects in the future, he said. “This will come as a great help to colleges located in rural areas. Today, Internet connection is available even in rural places, but there are no expert teachers. The new technology would resolve this issue and students will get better education,” Mr. Kakade said.
To a question, he said the university plans to implement tele-education system from March 8. “We hope that by this time all the affiliated colleges would have installed the facility,” he added.
