COIMBATORE: A call taxi driver, who is a self-proclaimed fan of actor Rajinikanth, was assaulted with sickles by a trio in Salem on Tuesday.

The man, ‘Rajini’ Palaniswamy, 46, of Karukkalvadi in Salem, admitted to hospital with cut injuries to his head, said the trio belonged to Naam Thamizhar Katchi. Palaniswamy had shot a selfie video soon after the attack and circulated it to his friends.

“Seeman party men had attacked me,” Palaniswamy was seen saying in the video with blood dripping from his head. Palaniswamy said he was attacked because he was criticising Seeman’s Naam Thamizhar Katchi and Thamizhaga Valvurimai Katchi.

Police said they were yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder attempt. “We have registered a case and started investigation. We are probing all angles,’’ a police officer said.
