MUMBAI: BEST workers received their payslips on Wednesday but most found that their salary had been cut for nine days—the duration of the strike in January. In some good news, the BEST gave a salary hike of up to Rs 4,000 this month to 13,000 junior grade staffers as it had assured the high court that they will get a 10-step hike in monthly pay.

A junior staffer said: “While we were glad to get a hike in salary, we were dejected to see that the salary was paid for just 22 days as we got a nine-day pay cut.”

The BEST will incur an annual burden of around Rs 55 crore for giving the hikes as per the agreement before the Bombay high court. The court has appointed a mediator, retired chief justice of Allahabad HC Ferdino Rebello, to resolve issues between the undertaking and BEST union. The mediator will look into the demands for a further 10-step hike for the junior grade workers, among other demands which include merger of BEST and BMC budgets.

BEST general manager Surendrakumar Bagde said there will be no retrenchment of staff. tnn
