Chennai:
To prepare the ground before undertaking the works, the authorities had been conducting encroachment removal drives in various phases for the past one year. “Close to 5,000 persons were evicted from the banks of the river. We are yet to complete the process, which will take some more time to complete it,” said an official source, adding that both the works would be taken up simultaneously.
As part of the project, works would be taken up near Maraimalai Adigalar bridge where a flood protection wall would be constructed on the left side of the river at an estimated cost of Rs 17.23 crore. This would be extended from Jafferkhanpet Road bridge to Manapakkam check dam at an estimated cost of Rs 12.95 crore.
The wall, explained an official, would be built as a precautionary measure.
In addition to this, the river would be widened from its mouth near Thiru Vi Ka bridge to Kotturpuram bridge. This would be done at an estimated cost of Rs 12.31 crore. Another segment on the same stretch would be desilted at a cost of Rs 19.32 crore.
“The inlets in Kancheepuram will also be desilted. This will be undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 13.33 crore,” he added.
“These places are prone to frequent flooding. The work orders will be awarded in the March and the parcel of projects will be taken off immediately. All these works are expected to be completed in the next one year,” a top official from the WRD told DT Next.
In addition to this, flood walls would be set up as part of flood prevention measures, officials said.
Under this project, works would be carried out at the three spots - near Maraimalai Adigal bridge in Saidapet, Jakkferkhanpet Road bridge to Manapakkam check dam and Thiru Vi Ka Bridge to Kotturpuram bridge. Along with it, flood protection walls would be built to avoid the recurrence of deluge in the upcoming monsoon periods, said officials.
