Kanpur: Driver of a gravel-laden dumper was burnt alive while another succumbed to injuries, and two others sustained grievous injuries in a pile-up after a dumper hit a divider on Kanpur-Jhansi highway near Pindari village in Aet police area in Jalaun district on Monday morning.
Inspector, Aet, Devendra Dwivedi said that the incident happened while all three gravel-laden-dumpers were on way to Kanpur from Jhansi on highway.
The deceased were identified as Sushil (22), a resident of Aet area of Jalaun and Firoz (30), a native of Deoria. Two other injured were admitted to the district hospital in a critical condition.
According to the police, a dumper hit road divider following which another dumper coming from behind crashed into it and minutes after, the third gravel-laden dumper heading towards Kanpur rammed into the two vehicles. Sushil got trapped in driver’s cabin and died while Firoz, another driver succumbed to injuries.
The villagers reached the spot and doused the fire before informing the police. The police, with the help of locals, rescued the injured trapped in the vehicles and pulled out bodies of the two drivers. The police said that the impact was such that collision led to a massive fire following leakage in fuel tanks of the dumpers.
A preliminary probe suggests that the driver of the dumper, ahead of the other two, was driving at a high speed. “The statments of eyewitness are being recorded to establish the sequence of events. The bodies have been sent for autopsy,” said SP Jalaun Arvind Chaturvedi.
