PANAJI: Goa police is strongly backing the implementation of Traffic Sentinel scheme, despite they themselves being unable to escape it.
The Traffic Cell has issued challans under the scheme to its own cops who have been flouting rules.
Goa police vehicles are registered in the name of the director general of police (DGP). Traffic sentinels have caught cops riding police bikes without helmets and have reported these violations to the traffic cell under the Traffic Sentinel scheme. The cell later generated notices to the DGP.
Speaking to TOI, DGP Muktesh Chander said that, “I have received notices for cops riding police bikes without helmet. These erring police personnel have been identified, and were directed to pay the challan,” he said.
“I have strictly warned the police personnel that strict action will be initiated if they are found violating traffic rules while on duty,” Chander said.
The police have said there has been a significant dip in deaths due to fatal accidents in the state after implementing the Traffic Sentinel scheme. Statistics revealed that for every 30 hours, one death was reported in a road accident, and the maximum number of people who died in such accidents were either two-wheeler or pillion riders.
5,834 traffic sentinels enrol in scheme
On November 10, 2017 Chander had launched the Traffic sentinel scheme, a platform on WhatsApp through which citizens could report traffic violations in the state to the traffic cell and earn cash rewards.
Recently, Goa police launched the traffic sentinel app, and over 5,834 traffic sentinels have been enrolled.
Traffic police booked have 71,162 cases and notices generated over 2 lakh since the inception of the scheme.
Based on the type of violation, the user accumulates points. For instance, reporting an instance of triple-seat riding on a two-wheeler will earn them 10 points, while parking on footpaths or zebra crossings will accrue three points. On accumulating 100 points, the user can claim a reward of Rs 1,000.
While MLAs cutting across the party lines have demanded scrapping of the scheme in the state, Bureau of police research and development (DG BPR&D) , which comes under the union ministry of home affairs, has stressed that this scheme should be implemented at the national level.
During the recent-concluded assembly session, legislators demanded that the scheme should be scrapped, or else it would create law and order problem.
People have been booked for assaulting traffic sentinels for clicking photos and reporting traffic violations.
