The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi on Saturday lodged a police complaint against “misleading telephonic calls” being made to the citizens of Delhi.
The CEO alleged that the callers are telling people that their names have been deleted from the electoral roll and that they can get the information restored.
Delhi Police Chief Spokesperson Madhur Verma confirmed that they have received a complaint.
“We are going through the details of the complaint. Appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
The office of the Delhi CEO, in the complaint, stated that it had been brought to its notice that certain persons are regularly making misleading calls to Delhiites.
Various written complaints received in this regard are being enclosed herewith. Prime facie, it appears that the matter needs to be thoroughly investigated in order that the factual correctness of the averments made in the aforementioned complaints are ascertained and necessary action under relevant extant laws is taken, the complaint read.
It added that the people of Delhi have been advised to be aware of such misleading calls coming from unknown persons, entities, or sources.
The CEO’s statement came a day after a BJP delegation met the Chief Election Commissioner and alleged that AAP had been making such phone calls.
“We had brought these unlawful calls to the attention of the Commission and it is time that these misleading attempts were investigated,” said BJP leader and Union Minister Vijay Goel.
Reacting to the development, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “Your ECs [Election Commissioners] should resign for converting the EC [Election Commission] into a BJP office. Shameful Modiji has subverted every institution. We will not allow BJP to succeed in its conspiracies [sic.]”
