New Zealand planning tourist tax

The history of Waitangi turned it into one of the country’s premier attractions, but its presence has come at a cost. Only about 2,000 inhabitants live in the area, which includes the nearby town of Paihia.

At least once a year, during the national Waitangi bank holiday, more than 15 times as many visitors visit the town. Hence, many residents warned about rising number of tourists.

The government has thus come up with a plan: a one-time tourist tax of $25, which would be introduced later this year and would assist in financing infrastructure projects and environmental preservation efforts.

Although a vast majority of cities and countries around the world are aiming for more visitors, a small minority are increasingly viewing them as a burden.

Educating tourists on how to behave or directing them towards alternative destinations could be an easy intermediate solution for tackling overburdening of tourists.
