The State government will initiate measures to create more safe zones in urban areas with round-the-clock checking system to reduce accidents and prevent traffic rule violations, Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran has said.
Opening the valedictory session of the State-level Road Safety Week observance at Town Hall here on Sunday, the Minister said the proposals for creating the new safe zones would be prepared soon to start implementation from next week. “Special checking to be carried out in safe zones will last for months as part of the accident prevention initiative. If it proves to be a success, similar methods will be introduced in all urban areas,” he said.
On the government move to create new road enforcement squads in Kerala, Mr. Saseendran said 53 such squads under the Motor Vehicles Department would swing into action within a month. The squad members would complete their official training at Kerala Police Academy in Thrissur on February 24, he added.
Public participation
Referring to the role of the public in preventing road accidents and conducting awareness programmes, the Minister said the government would seriously consider the possibility of forming new vigilance committees for road safety campaigns with the support of various residents’ associations.
District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) K. Sanjay Kumar Gurudin said the checks to ensure road safety would be strengthened in the limits of all police stations.
Mayor Thottathil Raveendran chaired the valedictory session. Trauma Care president C.M. Pradeepkumar administered an oath on road safety. Joint Transport Commissioner V. Sureshkumar was present.
