PANCHKULA: Animal Welfare Day was celebrated on the occasion of Basant Panchami on Sunday by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). To mark the occasion, a free vaccination drive was organised for street pups and dogs.

Sixty 60 pups were administered 6-way vaccine, 40 dogs were administered anti-rabies vaccine and 120 pups/dogs were dewormed, claimed Panchkula based NGO, Animal Welfare Association (AWA).

The day proved to be a fun day for dog lovers of the city, as they got to cuddle and play with cute little pooches though the same can’t be said for the pups, as like all babies most of them howled and yelped when they got their shots.

“Vaccination is important to prevent deaths from fatal and contagious canine diseases,” said Rajeev Kumar, a member AWA. “We felt an urgent need to vaccinate pups and dogs and create awareness about the deadly canine diseases, as we have been overwhelmed with canine distemper and parvo cases in the last three months. There have been over 90% fatalities despite extensive treatment and preventive measures to check the spread of these diseases. We really wish that all dog feeders would take the responsibility of getting their street pups/dogs vaccinated fully,” Sanyam Taneja, member, AWA.

Anti rabies vaccine is essential for all street dogs, as it reduces the risk of the deadly disease being transmitted to humans in case of dog bite.

The vaccination drive was facilitated by Singla’s Pet Centre in Sector 14, Panchkula and a large number of AWA members and volunteers were present to guide during the process. Vaccinated pups and dogs were also given deworming medicines to improve their immunity. Municipal commissioner, Rajesh Jogpal was also present during the occasion.
