Riverwood car crash leads to Sydney train delays

Police are searching for the driver of a car that crashed in Sydney's south-west and damaged train signalling equipment, causing delays across the Sydney Trains network on Monday morning.

The Honda Accord crashed through the boundary fence at the intersection of Romilly Street and Broadarrow Road in Riverwood at 1.55am, damaging the signal box.

Sydney Trains tweeted that crews were on site to keep services running on time, but some Airport Line services might experience some delays.

Earlier in the morning, the incident was also expected to affect some T3 Bankstown and T2 Leppington and Inner West line services.

However, Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins told Nine News that did not appear to be the case.

"Our engineers have been working on it remarkably well," he said.

"It is only affecting the T8 line - expect delays on that line. If you're travelling to the airport allow extra time but all other lines are working well."

A Transport Management Centre spokeswoman said at 7.30am most delays were less than 10 minutes, but commuters were still urged to allow extra travel time.

Sydney Trains said it had extra customer service staff on to assist commuters, and had placed buses in “strategic locations” in the event of major disruptions.

Commuters have also been urged to check their real-time apps for updates and to plan their trip ahead.

By the time police arrived at the scene of the Riverwood crash, the driver had left the scene. The car has since been towed for forensic examination.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash or the identity of the driver to contact Kogarah Police Station.

Separately, some T1 Western Line services were delayed on Monday morning due to an object on the track at Wentworthville.

Customers on that line were urged to listen to announcements and check their real-time apps for service updates.

Man charged after crash leaves Sydney to Newcastle line shut for an hour

Monday morning's train disruption comes after a vehicle crash near Lake Macquarie blocked Sydney to Newcastle trains on Sunday night.

A 4WD left the road at Dora Creek about 7.15pm before crashing through a fence and landing on its roof, blocking the tracks.

The train line was closed for an hour while the 4WD was removed.

The driver left the scene but was arrested in a nearby street by police. The man was taken to Morisset Police Station and breath tested, allegedly blowing 0.153, more than three times the maximum legal limit.

The man was charged with high-range PCA, negligent driving, and not giving his particulars to the owner of damaged property.

The man, whose licence was also suspended, is due to appear at Toronto Local Court on March 12.
