Used to lure people into investing money in fake projects

A couple has been arrested for allegedly cheating various persons to the tune of ₹30 crore and jumping bail, the police said on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Vinod Bansal (57) and Preeti Bansal (56). They are also wanted in three cases, pending with the CBI, and one with the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing, they said.

The couple was arrested in 2016 in connection with several cases of cheating and was later released on bail.

They jumped bail and failed to appear in courts, the police said.

The police were informed that the CBI had on January 29 registered a case against the accused who were wanted in several cases across the country, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar, said. The accused were later arrested from Ghaziabad, the police said.

During interrogation, the accused said they used to lure people into investing money in fake projects. Vinod said he had also taken loans from several banking and financial institutions, Mr. Kumar added.

Vinod also said he was a property dealer and in 2006, he was arrested in connection with a case of group housing scam. Vinod later opened a school in Ludhiana. He used to lure investors, made them invest in his school and later duped them, Mr. Kumar said.
