VADODARA/ ANAND: Marriages of six minors, who were going to tie the knot on the occasion of ‘Vasant Panchami’ on Sunday, were thwarted in Anand town.
After receiving a tip-off about the marriage of six teenagers including three, who were living in Rajasvi slum area, were going to tie the nuptial knot on Sunday, the social defence department officials along with Lotiya Bhagol police station team stopped the child marriages on Saturday.
Sources said that the officials had tough time explaining the consequences of such marriages to parents and elders of two girls and one boy who were in the age group 14-15 years. It was only after camping for nearly four hours at the spot and some tension that they were successful.
“The residents were not ready to admit that marriages were going to be held in the area. We explained the women and elders of the families that under-age marriages were illegal,” said S M Vohra, child marriage prevention officer of Anand district.
Their marriages were fixed in Kalamsar village of Khambhat taluka and Sili village near Sarsa town of Anand district with under-age boys and girls.
“We took affidavits from the elders of the families stating that they will not get their wards married before the legally eligible age,” he said.
