Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala women’ s commission (KWC) has taken suo motu case against Devikulam MLA S Rajendran for his abusive remarks against sub-collector Renu Raj.
KWC chairperson M C Josephine said that the case was registered based on media reports. “It will be referred to the DGP for further investigation,” she said.
In a statement, Josephine said that action would be taken for using bad words against women. “Nobody has the right to use words like ‘edi’ or ‘podi’ against women. The commission has taken serious note of the words used by a people’s representative against an educated woman. Women, irrespective of their social status, can file a complaint if they felt insulted or hurt. A normal course of justice will be followed in MLA’s case,” she added.
Meanwhile, Rajendran explained his stand in a Facebook post, stating that he was only challenging bureaucrats who block government projects. “Yes, it is true that I called her ‘aval’. It happened because I was responding as an ordinary citizen,” he said in the FB post. Seeking apology to the society for causing hurt, the MLA said that he would continue his stand for those who have elected him.
The controversy broke out after Munnar panchayat began construction of a shopping complex, ignoring a stop memo issued by the revenue department. A revenue team tried to stop the construction on Friday. Soon, the MLA intervened and made abusive remarks against the sub-collector.
