Bhiwandi: In a tragic incident, a 20-year-old youth drowned in a swimming pool at Taware compound in Bhiwandi on Sunday afternoon. According to police, the deceased, identified as Farman Parvej Khan, had cleared the Army’s physical and medical exams and was waiting for the final result of the written test, to be declared on Tuesday (Feb 12).
He resided in Balaji Nagar, Bhiwandi, along with his parents and younger brother. His father is a watchman and elder brother Shahbaz Khan has been serving in the Army for the last four years.
Poul Singh, An Armyman posted in Amritsar and a friend, said, “Farman’s elder brother Shahbaz is posted at Jalandhar, Punjab. He was informed of the tragedy, and will come for the funeral.” The Bhiwandi Bhoiwada police registered an accidental death report (ADR).
Police said Khan was expecting to leave for the Army traning next month. Farman was a BA final-year student of BNN (Bhiwandi Nizampura Nagar) college, and he had joined NCC (National Cadet Corps). After the lunch, Farman had gone with four friends to Taware compound swimming pool, run by Bhiwnadi Nizampura Municipal Corporation (BNMC).
The incident happened at 1.30pm on Sunday when Farman was swimming. The four friends saw him drowning and tried to rescue him. They pulled an unconscious Farman out of the pool. A motorcycle was arranged. He was rushed to the Prime Hospital. The doctors referred him to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival, said police.
Sanjay Pujari, the assistant inspector, said, “Khan knew swimming. Probably, he jumped into the pool, but water entered and filled his lungs through mouth and nose.” “The cause of death, according to the post-mortem report, was water in his lungs,” he added.
Poul Singh said, “Farman was a good swimmer. We would often swim together. He was rejected last year even after all the hard work. I still can’t believe he’s no more. I will reach home tomorrow for his funeral. Farman was going for the military training in March.”
