While this might have proven fruitful in several cases, a recent protest by students of Anna University became a miss for enthused reporters. 

It began last week, when a small group of students staged a protest near the varsity demanding abolishing a certain regulation implemented in 2017. Some reporters were alerted of the protest, and soon, a media contingent was at the venue covering the protests. 

Inspired by the spirited media coverage, the number of students at the protest grew in number, becoming a 200-strong gathering. The students soon formed smaller teams, produced placards at the protest venue itself and began showing more teeth in the protest. 

The university Registrar realising that the situation was spinning out of control, immediately swung into action and pacified the students within minutes, promising them that their demands will be considered at the earliest. 

Disappointed with the sudden development, a few visual media people even asked the Registrar some uncomfortable questions during the brief press meeting. It was heard that reporters murmured that they might have had “enough news” for the day if only the protest had continued till the evening. A little later, this scribe, among those who rushed to the venue, found out that many of the students had come prepared with packed lunch anticipating the protest to go on till the evening and that some students were even disappointed when the protest was short lived.
