Late Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika's family has decided not to accept the Bharat Ratna conferred upon him by the Narendra Modi government in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Hazarika was awarded the highest civilian award posthumously on January 26.
Hazarika's son Tej, who is based in the United States, confirmed to a local news channel in Assam on February 11 that he rejected the award based on the current scenario in the state.
Tej had earlier said that the award was a "victory for diversity."
"In his songs, he celebrated the richness of indigenous people not only of the Northeast but all of India and he advocated their inclusion in the Indian experience as essential to the success of Indian civilisation as a whole," Hazarika had said.
Tej, who is a publisher and a writer based in New York, is yet to make an official statement on the issue.
