Death toll touches 14, 24 more test positive for H1N1

VADODARA: As many as 24 patients tested positive for the swine flu on Sunday even as the death toll due to the deadly viral infection touched 14 with the death of a 30-year-old woman.
The woman from Bhoj village of Padra taluka succumbed in a private hospital at 8:50am.
Of the 24 patients who tested positive, 20 are residents Vadodara city while one patient each is from Vadodara rural, Panchmahal and Narmada district and one patient from Madhya Pradesh. These also include a two-and-a half-year old girl child from R V Desai Road. With the new cases, the total number of swine flu cases registered within VMC limits has touched 138 since January 1. Of this, 56 patients have been cured, 72 are undergoing treatment while 10 died.
Within the VMC limits, the new cases have been reported from Manjalpur, Warasiya, Tarsali, Wadi, GIDC Vadsar Main Road, Sama Savli Road, Harni, Waghodiya Road, VIP Road, Vasna Road, Karelibaug, R V Desai Road, Raopura and Chhani areas.
In Vadodara rural, a fresh case surfaced in Vemali village of Vadodara taluka while the patient from Panchmahal district hails from Jambughoda. Another patient from Narmada who has tested positive hails from Tilakwada.
In Vadodara rural, the total number of swine flu positive patients since January 1, has touched 23 out of which ten have been cured, nine are under treatment while four have succumbed to the virus.
Meanwhile, a three-member team from the union health ministry visited the SSG Hospital on Sunday and assessed facilities at the isolation ward and laboratory.
The union health ministry has sent two teams to assess the situation and assist Gujarat and Punjab in strengthening their response mechanism to contain the ailment.
The centre has also advised the states to involve district collectors in enhancing public awareness and outbreak response. The guidelines for influenza vaccination have been shared with all the states and the details of manufacturers of vaccine provided by the Drug Controller General of India have also been shared with the states where the number of fatalities due to H1N1 virus are on a rise.
