Firm will use Mobile World Congress event to reveal new machine, which it says is designed for use in cities

Seat will reveal a new concept car previewing an electric machine developed as a ‘mobility platform’ at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona later this month.

The Spanish firm has released a single darkened teaser image of the machine, which it says is part of its “urban micromobility strategy”.

The teaser image pictures a narrow, high machine, with narrow headlights, a triangular central grille and a low-mounted Seat logo. That would suggest some form of microcar similar to the Renault Twizy.

Seat says the concept car continues the strategy set by its eXS scooter, which it developed with Segway and unveiled at MWC last year. Electric scooters are increasingly being seen as ‘last-mile solutions’ for use in cities, and Seat is one of several car firms to evaluate them.

The firm is gearing up to launch its first electric car, a production version of the eMii that it unveiled at MWC in 2017. Last year it rolled out a fleet of prototype machines in Barcelona, which users – largely made up of Seat employees – could gain use of through a mobile app.

The production version of that model is also set to be revealed shortly, with the firm’s first bespoke EV – built on the VW Group’s MEB electric car platform – due within the next three years.

Seat will also launch a 5G connected car pilot test at MWC, which it will run alongside Spanish communications firm Telefonica. The test will show how 5G mobile connectivity will allow cars to communicate with web-connected infrastructure, and is a key step on the road to autonomous driving.

Seat to launch first electric car in 2019

Our Verdict

Seat Ibiza

A model upon which Seat has staked its future, the new Ibiza must now deliver in an extremely competitive market. So can the supermini upset the likes of Ford, Mini, Mazda, Nissan and others?

Seat have definitely got something here, many people who complain about the cost of an electric car but want something cheap and efficient may look at this as the answer.

The article suggests something of the form of a Renault Twizzy, Seat may beat that if they put full doors on it, the Twizzy isn't much fun in the cold or rain!

Just buy Aston Martin....
