Many misunderstand the meaning of the word spirituality. People call themselves spiritual to keep them away from achieving goals. But the truth is that even without spirituality, people haven’t achieved anything bigger or better in life. This is proven when we look at human health progress, financial status or the harmony between two humans or two countries. So, you can avoid spirituality if you feel it’s a hindrance in your life or career, but remember, without spirituality, you will not be able to live a life you want to live.

Let us first have clarity about this term spirituality and its significance. In general, it is a search of god, finding oneness with the divine, experiencing the ultimate source of creation, or raising your intelligence to the highest consciousness. Some people end up foolishly comparing spirituality with religion. Spirituality is nothing but gaining power to regain the lost ability and to retain the existing ability to recreate your own reality. If this purpose is not achieved, then what you are practicing is not spirituality; it is stupidity.

In life, knowingly or unknowingly we tend to seek an extra power only when we get stuck with an obstacle. Many think that spirituality will help them gain power over any problem or stress in life. Surprisingly it doesn’t work like that. For example, when you are unwell, only medicines will help you regain your health. Those medicines are not for your well-being, it’s to regain your normal state.

At that time, there is no use of entering into spirituality and meditation thinking that it will give you power to overcome the illness. Rather this practice is going to help you fix the problems in life. Discipline is different from treatment. So, once you come out of your illness, it’s good to maintain yourself fit and healthy by following exercises, proper sleep and food habits.

The same is to be practiced for the mind. Many turn to spirituality the moment they feel they are into a problem, which is a wrong approach. Basically, a healthy body and a sound mind are essential to make use of your spiritual powers. Spirituality is a process which helps you fix the problems in life. It’s a medicine for your mental health. The world today has reached a place where you can replace anything and everything in your body. Medical science has advanced to the level of transplanting almost every possible organ in our body, but when it comes to a problem in our mind, sadly no one else can help other than our own self. On the whole spirituality is an exercise to keep your mind healthy. It’s a combination of two things- Regaining the lost ability of the mind and retaining the existing ability. Mind is the only source of power for human beings to approach life with discrimination. Vedas say that knowledge is nothing without having the ability to discriminate.

Knowledge alone will not help us come out of a problem. In any given situation, our mind will the power to discriminate between good and bad with the knowledge it possesses. This is possible only through spirituality and spirituality is not doing puja or reciting mantras. All these are just belief systems which cannot bring any change in our lives. This misunderstanding of spirituality is the reason for various psychological and psychosomatic problems in the world.

Knowingly or unknowingly, every human being reaches a stage where he realises he is having a problem or a situation which he cannot handle. Now spirituality helps you to first understand that you cannot run away from the problem. It will give you the strength to discriminate every thought and action in two ways. First you should learn to accept the problem you have. Then spirituality will give you the realisation that any action that you involve in while facing a bad situation is going to either diminish or enhance the problem. This discrimination is possible only because of spiritual powers. This is where Atma-dhyana and Prana-vritti plays a vital role in bringing dramatic changes in every aspect of life. Once you connect with the higher consciousness, you are in real experience with the eternal and perpetual power which in turn supports your mind to receive all the energy to approach the same situation with high perceptual ability. The realisation of the above truth will definitely shift your life in every aspect once you put it into practice. And then what follows is magic. You not only come out of the problem, but you make sure that you don’t get into problems in your life. You automatically get the strength to face and overcome any situation. But this is possible only when you consistently practice spirituality. At this point let us once again recollect the fact that medicines can only cure our illness, but regular exercise and healthy habits are essential to maintain ourselves fit. It’s the same with spiritual practice as well. Acting promptly during a stressful situation is not the permanent solution to have a life free of stress. Spirituality should be practiced consistently to achieve all that you want in life. If you do so, the health you want is no more a problem, the wealth that you want is no longer a struggle and the happiness you want in relationship is no more a dream. Anything, and everything is achievable. Above all, Vedas say that you are born in human form on this planet earth not to run away but to enjoy and celebrate your stay till the last moment of your breath. And the science which makes this possible for human beings is spirituality.
