Swine flu toll climbs to nine in Vidarbha

One death has been reported from Akola circle too, taking the total deaths due to swine flu in Vidarbha to nine.
The latest victims were undergoing treatment at New Era Hospital and SureTech Hospital in city. As per NMC record, both the patients, who did not belong to the city, died on February 1. One belonged to Chhindwara and the other hailed from Bhandara.
Dr Sunil Ghurde, medical officer, NMC, told TOI that 54 swine flu patients have been reported from the city this year, while another 31 patients from other places have undergone treatment in the city. Of the 54, three have died, while five from the 31 positive cases have succumbed to the illness.
Dr RF Farooqui, deputy director of health services, Akola circle, said only five positive cases have been reported since January in the five districts of the circle. “Except for one death in Akola district, there are no deaths in these five districts,” he said. The other districts in the circle are Buldhana, Amravati, Washim and Yavatmal.
Dr Milind Ganvir, assistant director of health services (ADHS), malaria, said in Nagpur circle, covering six districts of Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Gondia and Gadchiroli total 79 patients have been found positive for swine flu. Of these, eight deaths have occurred so far.
Dr Ganvir has appealed to private practitioners to be extremely vigilant about the symptoms of swine flu and start treatment as soon as the patient visits them. “They should have high index of suspicion. Every person with fever should be looked at minutely,” he said. Some people are yet to realize the causes of the disease and don’t mind sneezing, coughing in public without any protective measures. People should avoid highly crowded places, he added.
