Kate Spade’s new generation of celebrity fans

Ahead of the brand’s show at New York Fashion Week, Vogue looks at the young stars who love Kate Spade, from Millie Bobby Brown to Maisie Williams

Kate Spade may have shot to fame in the 1990s with her quirky style and unerring eye for accessories, but the brand’s popularity was still deeply felt last June. Following the death of self-taught designer, #MyFirstKateSpade posts flooded social media, recounting fans’ first and formative encounters with the world of luxury buys and adulthood which the brand represented. Though Spade herself left her eponymous label in 2007, the brand has managed to maintain its status as an accessible entry point into the luxury world, helping it attract a whole new generation of shoppers with its playful purses and witty designs.
The label’s appeal to a younger fanbase is best reflected by the latest campaign—the first from new creative director Nicola Glass—which features some of the brightest talents in the acting world. Ozark’s Julia Garner, Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink and If Beale Street Could Talk star KiKi Layne all feature in the dreamy, floral-filled images for SS19, photographed by Tim Walker, who previously shot campaigns for the label when Spade and her husband Andy were at its helm.
Along with the brand’s new faces, a host of young celebrities have sported Kate Spade on the red carpet and out and about, including Millie Bobby Brown, Maisie Williams and Lucy Hale. Meanwhile, the likes of Issa Rae and Gillian Jacobs have graced the front row in recent seasons, along with long-time supporter Kate Bosworth. Ahead of the brand’s AW19 show during New York Fashion Week, Vogue takes a look at Kate Spade’s new generation of celebrity fans.
