COIMBATORE: The Podanur police on Sunday arrested a minor boy, who stabbed a 20-year-old college student to death using a broken beer bottle following a petty quarrel at Vittal Nagar.

The deceased was identified as K Vishnu of Vittal Nagar in Podanur. He was a II-year BBA student in a private college, police sources said. “Vishnu and four friends, including the minor, were consuming liquor on an open ground at Vittal Nagar on Saturday night. The boy had completed class X and was working in a lathe workshop. Vishnu, who was in an inebriated condition, asked the boy to call him anna (elder brother). But the boy refused and called him his name. Feeling disrespected, Vishnu attacked the boy, who fell on the ground. The boy picked up a broken beer bottle and stabbed Vishnu in the throat,” a police officer said.

Seeing Vishnu struggling for life, his friends, including the boy, rushed him to a private hospital at Sundarapuram and told doctors told he had met with an accident. The doctors checked Vishnu and told the youths to take him to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

“The friends took Vishnu, who was bleeding profusely, to CMCH. But he died without responding to treatment on Sunday morning. The doctors informed the traffic investigation wing (TIW) of the city police, who reached the hospital and noticed the injury on the throat. The TIW police alerted Podanur (law&order) police inspector JK Gobi, who visited the hospital and held inquiry with the four. The minor boy confessed to the crime,” the officer told TOI.

Podanur police registered a case against the minor under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him on Sunday evening. He will be lodged in the juvenile home on Avinashi Road on Monday morning.
