A Fall River man is suffering from mercury poisoning after trying to melt dental fillings, according to reports from NBC 10.

According to the Fall River Fire Department, two weeks ago a man in a Hamlet Street apartment building tried to melt down the fillings in a pan, believing them to be silver. They were in fact mercury.

He has been in the hospital since Jan. 28, the report says. It also states that a woman has been taken to the hospital, and several animals have also died in connection with the incident.

District Chief Michael Clarke told NBC 10 that the Hamlet Street building is now uninhabitable. The building's owner is making arrangements for tenants.
