MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar (KLOH'-buh-shar) of Minnesota is expected to join the 2020 race for president on Sunday.
Klobuchar would become the most prominent candidate from the Midwest as the party tries to win back voters in a region that helped fuel Donald Trump's 2016 victory.
Klobuchar says she'll make a "big announcement" about her 2020 plans during an afternoon event along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. She's already scheduled to speak Feb. 21 in Iowa, site of the nation's first caucuses.
Klobuchar has promoted her broad appeal across Minnesota, noting she's earned support from voters in urban, suburban and rural areas, including in dozens of counties Trump won.
But she'd face stiff challenges in a field that includes better-known candidates with the ability to raise huge amounts of money.
